Crazy Horse

Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer, SD

This was probably one of my favorite places. It was amazing to see the work in progress. The first blast on the mountain was in 1948, removing 10 ton of rock. Chief Henry Standing Bear and other Lakota elders wanted to show the world "the red man has great heroes also." Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski built a cabin and started the work on Crazy Horse. Sixty-five years later, the memorial is the world's largest mountain carving in progress. This project is not federally funded. Korczak's died in 1982 and his family has continued on with this dream.
One of the things that amazed me, was that Mt. Rushmore will fit into the top of Crazy Horse's head. That is how big it is. The entire thing will be 641 ft.long and 563 ft. high.
